Definition #
A team and a group engaging in teamwork are not the same thing. Hard two-tier distinction. Team: individuals cannot achieve individual wins or losses independent of their partners — bound at the outcome. Teamwork: individuals can achieve individual wins and losses regardless of what their partners do — bound at the goal, not the outcome. Diagnostic — [The Win/Loss Test]: “Can the individuals in this group achieve individual wins and losses regardless of their partners?” Yes = teamwork, not a team. In restaurants: the leadership team is the only real team. FOH and BOH engage in teamwork. Conflating the two produces the T.E.A.M. mantra bastardization — “Together Everyone Achieves More” — applied to groups that are not bound at the outcome.
