Definition #
Every role on the stage is the live, continuous performance of its verb. Server serves. Bartender tends. Runner runs. Cook cooks. Host hosts. Operator operates. The role is never reducible to any single noun-task inside it. The verb contains all the nouns; no noun contains the verb.

Canon. Governs the book’s entire treatment of roles.
Why Behind the Thinking #
The nouns inside any role are partial expressions of the verb — facets, not definitions. The role is the simultaneous, continuous performance of all of them at once. Diagnostic: if you can describe the role with a single noun-task, the role has already been reduced. [The Reduction Failure] is what happens when the verb collapses into the noun.
