Relational Loop

< 1 min read

Definition #

The closed circuit through which all relational value in a restaurant operation flows: Operator to Cast to Guest to Cast to Operator. A loop, not a hierarchy or chain of command.

Why Behind the Thinking #

The restaurant operator who manages up — to metrics, ownership, and the P&L — while neglecting to manage down (to the cast) and across (to the Guest) is operating the business from outside the loop. The numbers they’re managing are the outputs of a system they’re not participating in. The loop explains why operational problems that appear to be Guest-facing are almost always cast-facing first, and cast-facing problems are almost always operator-facing first. Every decision, interaction, and standard either strengthens or weakens a connection in the loop, and the effect compounds in both directions.
