Definition #

The active discipline of performing a multi-variable diagnostic of the operation in real time. The operator (or the named Lead for a given domain) stands at a position on the path, takes in multiple signals simultaneously, and reads whether each signal is at standard, drifting, or failing. A taught, practiced, repeatable read, with variables named and “good” defined.

Why Behind the Thinking #

[The Reading] happens at every stop on the figure 8, not only at the pass — some stops are narrow (bathroom, exterior), Stop 2 is the widest. The same practice carries across roles with different variables: every named Lead runs a domain-specific Reading. The discipline runs the six locked variables in order — Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste, Touch, and [The Aggregate] (the five senses taken as one signal, always last, standing question at every stop: “Do any of the sensory reads signal something off?”). No “pre-” framings exist — every Reading is a Reading, because “pre” suggests an incompleteness the discipline does not want to start with. Taste is carried at every stop via retronasal olfaction — the palate tastes smells, so it is never absent even at stops that seem visual or auditory. Not a checklist and not a scan — the distinction is that failure modes must be visible to the reader in real time, which a checklist or scan does not guarantee.
